How to Choose the Perfect Family Photographer

Are you on the hunt for the perfect family photographer? Finding the perfect fit is essential capture and preserve some of your most cherished moments. A great family photographer will have you going back year after year because you love them and the final product they deliver. But, how do you ensure you find the right person for the job? In this blog post, I'm going to share my top tips with you for choosing the perfect family photographer.

1. Define Your Style

How I photograph and edit families is unique to me and completely different than how others might approach the same subject. Start your search by considering what kind of photos you're drawn to. Do you prefer candid, natural shots, or are you more inclined towards traditional, posed portraits? Do you like true to colour editing, warm or cool tones, or black and white even? Knowing your style will help you find a photographer whose work resonates with you.

2. Ask for Recommendations

Seek advice from friends, family, or colleagues who have had successful experiences with family photographers. Personal recommendations can be invaluable.

3. Check Portfolios and Galleries

Once you've shortlisted a few photographers, dive into their portfolios and galleries. Pay attention to the quality of their work, their consistency, and whether their style matches your preferences. While social media can give you a good idea of someone's work, don't be afraid to ask to see a full gallery! Do you feel the full gallery reflects what you're looking for from a family session?

4. Experience Matters

Experience counts for a lot in family photography. Experienced photographers know how to work with kids, deal with unexpected situations, and capture those fleeting, special moments. Too many times I have had people tell me that they were unhappy with their previous family pictures… Which absolutely breaks my heart because once this season of life is over there is no going back to redo the pictures. Being able to photograph families is such an honour and I don't take it lightly!

5. Ask About Availability

Before falling head over heels for a photographer, make sure they're available for your preferred date if needed. Many good photographers are booked months in advance, so it's crucial to coordinate schedules.

6. Read Reviews and Testimonials

Sift through reviews and testimonials on the photographer's website or other online platforms. Real client experiences can give you a sense of their professionalism and customer satisfaction.

7. Interview Potential Photographers

Set up a meeting or phone call to interview potential photographers. This is your chance to gauge their personality and ensure you have good chemistry. After all, you want someone who can connect with your family and make everyone comfortable during the session.

8. Pricing and Packages

Discuss pricing and packages upfront. Ensure there are no hidden costs and that you're comfortable with the investment. If high-quality prints, albums or wall art are important to you, be sure to ask the photographer if that is something they offer to clients. Remember, you're not just paying for pictures; you're investing in timeless memories.

9. Special Requests

If you have specific requests or ideas for your family photos, communicate them to the photographer when inquiring with them. A good photographer should be open to your suggestions and willing to customize the session to meet your needs (but they won't want to be put on the spot!).

10. Trust Your Instincts

Lastly, trust your instincts. If a photographer checks all the boxes but something doesn't feel quite right, it might be best to explore other options. You should have confidence in your choice.

Choosing the perfect family photographer is a big decision, but it doesn't have to be overwhelming.
